I think that she could be on either side, supporting Marcus or the DHS. It seems like what she is doing is a bit suspicious to me but maybe she could also be trying to help Marcus by getting him and Ange out. If she is a bad person, she could get Marcus in a lot of trouble.
I don't trust Masha. Because she said she was apart of the DHS and she wants out, but she could be a triple agent. And she could be helping DHS find him. I think Marcus should follow the basic life lesson; dont trust strangers over the internet, they could be anyone.
Jack. I personally do not think that this was a good idea because saying this, he put everyone else that uses the Xnet and people who do the things that he does in jeopardy.
@ Inner Circle I think the news twists things a lot in today's news, just to get the "juiciest story" or to get as many people watching to agree with them.
@Inner Circle I think that the reporters twisted his words on purpose, to make the homeland security happy. The way I look at it, they knew exactly what he was trying to say, but twisted his words anyway. Kathleen
If Masha is someone looking out for Marcus I do believe that it is Dareyl because he may be one of the few who know that M1k3 is actually Marcus, and Masha is really percistent in trying to get Marcus to say yes.
@Garret I think that it was necessary to tell Barbara about the xnet, because he is going to get in trouble either way because he wasn't supposed to tell his story anyway. Now, at least they can't find anything else out and make his whole story look like a lie. Kathleen
@Class Do you think that Zeb is for real or is he secretly working for the DHS? It's kind of weird that he was dressed like a homeless guy but Marcus observed that he had straight, white teeth. Do you think that he really is on Marcus' side or that he just wants to turn him in, if he's not he's not already part of the DHS?
I would hope he isn't working for the DHS and I would guess that he isn't homeless. Maybe he is a member of Xnet and part of the inner circle but he was captured.
Maybe he wasn't always homeless and hasn't been homeless for long so he doesn't look too bad yet, he could have lost his parents in the bombing and now has no place to live. He hasn't made any moves to put Marcus in danger, all he did was tell him about his friend Darryl. However it seems strange that he would recognize Marcus so easily, even if he had a description from Darryl.
At first I thought that Zeb was someone trying to help Marcus but after Marcus describes him having straight white teeth while also dressing homeless it makes me feel that Zeb is a DHS member who is undercover.
@Class Do you think "Masha" really has all the information she says she has, and if so how did she get that information, like from someone close to Marcus?
In a society that seems to have cameras everywhere, if Masha is able to hack into the network figure out who Marcus is then it would be the reason why she has so much information on him.
I think that just the story in the newspaper will be enough to embarrass the DHS, and if nothing else, will cause lots of trouble for them by inflicting fear in the people about what the DHS is actually doing to them
He will probably virus their entire system and cause so many programming problems that it will be nearly impossible for them to recover fast enough to stop his attack on their data for the city.
@ Jack S. I think Marcus would want revenge on the DHS even if Darryl had been let go, because they humiliated him and took away his pride when they kidnapped him. But if Darryl had been let go, Marcus might be too afraid of the DHS to do anything.
I think that Darryl is still alive, and will be released after the story goes in the newspaper, if that is sooner than when they find the real terrorists. If they find the real terrorists first, then I think that he will be released then.
@Class It seems like Ange is pushing Marcus to do more than he wants to do in the xnet. Whenever he mentions that it is risky or that he wants to pull out a little, she pushes him to keep going, ignoring what he is saying. Why do you think she does this?
I think that she does this because he puts on the front that it matters so much to him. He is the one that started the xnet, and he says that he will do anything to take down the DHS. I think that she is just frustrated that he is not willing to take some risks. Kathleen
I think she is doing this because she is more daring than he is. I also think she is because she isn't M1k3y, Marcus is, so she might not get in trouble when he does.
I think that Ange likes to be in danger, kind of like Julia in 1984. I think that Ange does things with Marcus becacuse she wants to break the law and be rebellious, also like Julia. I also think that she wants to see how far they can push the Xnet, and what can happen if they do.
I think that she does this because she "wears the pants" as said in the @Inner Circle. She is the person saying and doing the stuff so Marcus will get held accountable for HER actions.
I fell that Anje kind of is using Marcus which is why she pushes him to do things he doesn't want to because if everything goes up in flames she will not get in trouble with the DHS as much as Marcus would.
After Marcus meets up with Van at her school he doesn't seem to care much for her anymore, only embarrassed to be with Ange. I think that it is too late for Van to come back in the story.
@Class How do you think that the story is going to play out? Do you think that he is going to go with Marsha? Or is he going to stay and keep trying to take down the DHS? Kathleen
@Kathleen I think that he will actually do both because he might use Masha to help him bring down the DHS, so it would be like "killing two birds with one stone."
@Outer Circle--Comparing Ange and Marcus's relationship to Winston and Julia's...which do you think is more mature? Do you think the teenagers have more insight into what a relationship is than the adults?
@ Moritz I think the teenagers have more insight to being in a relationship mainly because the idea of love is not ridiculed in their society, and they have movies and books and their parents to learn from.
Yes. I do think that the teenagers have more sense of what a relationship is because they actually interact with each other. They use each other for sex, but not to the extent of Winston and Julia's relationship does.
The teenagers definitely seem to have more maturity, but they also live in a less extreme society and are allowed to do more with less fear. It isn't illegal for them to be in a relationship while Julia and Winston's is illegal.
I think that Ange and Marcus's relationship is more mature because Winston and Julia just wanted to break the law and go against the government and they didn't know what a relationship was, but Ange and Winston liked similar things and related to each other
I believe that Marcus and Anje have had more of a mature relationship compared to Winston and Julia but then again both relationships revolve around their interests on challenging the system.
I believe that Marcus and Anje have had more of a mature relationship compared to Winston and Julia but then again both relationships revolve around their interests on challenging the system.
Van played a big role in the story so she will most likely come back. And Marcus still thinks about her sometimes. If she wasn't going to come back I don't think the author would keep mentioning her. I just think she can't come back right now because of Ange. They don't get along, and in the beginning Marcus showed signs of having feelings for her.
I think that Darryl's father is very sad and angry but he doesn't break down and show it. I think that he is frustrated about the government and is going to do something about it.
When they went to his house he just seemed defeated. He had lost his only son and had no one in his life to talk to. He was probably worried at first, but eventually he just gave up. Now that he has hope of Darryl being alive (even if he is in prison) he seems frustrated with the DHS.
@Nick I think that it would be a wide range of emotions. To put it into account its like having one of your parents die but their body is never found and then someone coming to your front door and saying that they have proof that your parent is alive. I would think that Darryl's father has a lot of questions that he would like to ask his son and the DHS.
@Mmoritz I agree that the teenagers have a more mature realationship. It seems they are more in love and truly care for each other. Winston and julia just seemed to do it to rebel against the governement
@MMoritz I think that Ange and Marcus's relationship is more mature, because it is based more around talking and getting to know each other than Winston and Julia's. They went out to the concert together, and they actually put their sexual relationship to the side in order to do the interview. They actually care about each other. Kathleen
@Garrett I think Zeb is okay and his story is legitimate because if he was with DHS they would have been able to take and detain Marcus already. I think Zeb is okay and i wonder weather he will re-enter the story.
@CLASS With the new technology in the schools, do you think that their goal is peer pressure if they do not sign the paper that allows them to be filmed all day in the class room? (I think this was last section's reading)
@Class Because there is a difference in maturity levels between teenagers and children is that the reason why children are punished when they try to see the best in people? For example, when I was about five I waved to a homeless man on the street and my mother yelled at me for doing so, and there wasn't a day at my elementary school when we didn't hear the phrase "Stranger Danger." In the book and in this discussion there seems to be a fine line between trust and betrayal. It seems that we always have to question the character that is introduced why can't we just trust and believe that they are going to be the good guy?
@Mrs.Moritz Ange and Marcus's relationship is becoming mature, because they are going through all of this together and they talk and really care about one another, but it's not fully matured due to the fact they haven't known each other to long, and had a petty fight.
They have only known each other like a month or two, and majority of their connection is about the Xnet so it might feel deep but it might not actually be too strong, because when they had that disagreement, it was about the Xnet, not them personally.
I accidentally deleted my comment, but I think that they have known each other since the key-signing party when it seems like they first met. It must have been at least a few months since then.
I think that some how, the DHS will figure out what she is writing about and will target her and do something to her to get her to stop writing the article. To get her to stop, they might even send her to jail or 'Treasure Island.'
@Class Is Ange convincing Marcus to make the wrong decision to keep fighting the DHS? Could she maybe be getting him in more trouble than before? Is this "Masha" a friend or foe"?
@Lauren Although I thought that maybe they would at first, the more I thought about it the less likely it seemed. She is just doing her job and writing a good story. If they don't want it published, don't give someone something to write about. Kathleen
Jack. I think that Marcus will try to take them down and completely shut down their operations. I think he will make a move, but he has no plans thus far. I think he will get his ideas from Ange or this MARSHA character.
I don't think that Marcus has a plan for what he will do to the DHS. I think whatever he will do will come from Ange or Masha, because he is not as aggressive.
@class Once Barbara Stratford publishes the story about Darryl, What will the DHS do the Darryl? Will they kill Darryl and say that Darryl was never a person, an "un-person"?
I don't think that they will kill him, but I think that they may do something to him that is quite cruel, and possibly to Zeb. Or they may relase him for PR purposes to continue to look good in the public's eyes.
@ Jack B. If someone was born and raised in one place, and everything they've ever known, all their friends and the life they worked for, they aren't going to want to leave it all just because some agency thinks everyone is a terrorist.
@Class Do you think Marcus only has a couple of days before the DHS finds out he's M1CK3Y? Or could that have just been something Masha said trying to scare him in to going with her?
I think that could have been just an empty threat to get him to realize how much danger he is in. I doubt that they would randomly attack him or that they know where he lives and everything about him.
@Jack If a terrorist attacked your city, would you honestly just get on a plane and leave? It would take my family a year of savings before I could do that. Plus finding a job where you're moving to. It really is not as easy as you think it is. Kathleen
@Jack I think everything you listed are all equally important because they are all connected. And maybe instead of looking in to it, you should try to connect it, and the impotence each has to the overall plot.

@ Jack
ReplyDeleteI feel like it was a mistake to tell her about the xnet just since that will get him in trouble and it wasnt needed to tell barabra.
@Inner Circle
ReplyDeleteI think that the reporters twisted his words on purpose, to make the homeland security happy. The way I look at it, they knew exactly what he was trying to say, but twisted his words anyway.
Kathleen
Who do you think that masha is? Is it a person that we have already met in the story or will it be someone else that will cause a twist?
ReplyDeleteJack--Do you think it is someone watching out for Marcus??? Lightbulbs!
DeleteI think that Masha could be Darryl. And I do think that he is watching out for M1k3y because he hated the DHS too.
DeleteI also think that MASHA could be Daryll and is trying to watch out for Marcus. or M1k3y ^^
DeleteI think that Masha is Van looking out for Marcus. I think that Van still cares for him but doesn't want to talk to him because of Ange.
DeleteMaybe someone is watching out for him, but maybe they are only concerned about themselves and using him to achieve their goals.
