@Paige It seemed in the beginning like the xnetters would win by messing up all the people's IDs and slowing down the police, but now the government is figuring out how to catch people so I think that if the xnetters do not find new ways to rebel soon that they will eventually be caught and the resistance will die out.
@Class Why do you think that the author or Marcus keeps giving people related to the government non-real names such as booger, Zit, and severe haircut lady? I think it's because he wants to make it seem like the government has no feeling and that they are basically non-human.
Interesting Rachel--I never thought about it. But it is a way to make them somewhat obscure and not personal. I wonder if her does this with other people.
@Rachel I agree, I also believe Marcus is doing this because he doesn't feel the government deserves the respect people place upon it. He thinks the government and homeland security is a joke.
I think it was really unfair that they sprayed the crowd with pepper spray, also I am confused why they had to go stop the concert because even though it was illegal and they had cops there just in case something actually bad happened but nothing bad had happened when they attacked.
@ Rachel I think that the author gives the government related members weird names because he wants to show the kid side to Marcus and also to show that the members are non-human.
@Rachel Well I just think those are their names to Marcus because he doesn't know their real names and since he is telling the story, he needs names for them.
Did anybody know that these technologies existed? I had no idea that they were real until Mr. Fisch came and talked to us. I don't know half the technologies there are out there today.
@Class How far do you think Charles will go to get rid of all opposition to the DHS? Do you think he could get Marcus in trouble like he did to Mrs.Galvez?
Do you think Mrs. Galvez went too far with the discussion? If you look at the chapter again, she was basically facilitating a discussion among her students. I thought the discussion was awesome. Did she let it go too far?
@Garret I agree that it is really weird that Marcus's dad changed his opinion so quickly about the cops arresting people, but I also think that the disappearance of Marcus really took a toll on his father which I think made him change his opinion about the arrests.
Melissa- They were there because it was illegal to throw the party in the park because of noise. They probably just used it as an excuse to arrest all those people.
@Garrett I am very concerned that his dad switched sides again. Do you think that the government did something to him to make him change his mind? It is not natural that he would be totally against it and then totally for it when it increases. Maybe he will feel more secure with higher tech technology.
Well Marcus's parents really thought he was dead, and if someone you love dies, you don't want that to happen again so a lot of people are willing to do as much as they can to protect their loved ones after an experience like that.
@class How do you think that the organisation that brought up "dont trust people over 25" was able to make products and even get singers to join in the act of it.
Do you think that Jolu and Van will be involved later in the story? Even though they were originally together, neither of them seems to want to work with Marcus anymore. Why are they on the cover if they aren't going to be important later on?
@Class I think Ange will be like Julia in that he will eventually desire her love and in the end something dramatic will happen to her like she will die. Does anyone else have any predictions?
Annie- I think Ange is much more similar to Julia because she is more about the movement than Van. Van backed off right away and Ange doesn't understand how it works at all and is 100% committed to it.
@mmoritz I do think that Mrs.Galves went to far with the discussion even though it was amazing. On this topic do you think that the teachers know that they are not allowed to have discussions about the government with their students.
I admire Mrs. Galvez for facilitating a really engaging conversation among her students. Often times, I think teachers (myself included) walk a fine line with what should be discussed in class. I believe that we can have discussions in our class about our government, as long as I do not bring my own feelings/positions into the discussion and force you to believe what I believe. It is the same with religion. However, it is really difficult for a teacher to shut down a really good engaging discussion. Personally, I have to gauge how far to let discussions go--because even if I am not the one talking--I am ultimately the one who is responsible. :)
@Tram I think that the government underestimates the "Don't trust anyone over 25" movement because they are not openly encouraging people to rebel. They see them as a minimal threat that will not become a major rebellion.
You can see that they are beginning to become worried though because they started demanding that the concert-goers leave and they gassed those not leaving in order to break up the gathering.
@Mmoritz I think that it was a poor dicision on the schools part to fire Ms. Galvez. I saw her as facilitating a class discussion connecting current events to past happenings as a neutral party. She was not putting her opinions out there, just trying to get her students think. I think she was in the right, not in te wrong
@Natalie I believe that Jolu and Van will return becuase they are Marcus's favorite friends and have been major characters sicne the begininng and it would be stupid to completley eliminate them from the story
@Natalie I think that Jolu and Van will help Marcus later in the story because Marcus's key group of people will fall apart and he will have to go back to the only friends he truly trusts.
@Angelo I think that the teachers must know they aren't allowed to talk about the government in their classroom because the government has such strict control over most things.
But why are the teachers not aloud to talk about the government, have they taken away freedom of speech even though that has nothing to do with terrorists?
@ class All the things that Marcus did hurt the government somehow but most of the time, it backfired. What do you think of this? Do you think that Marcus should still keep going on with his plans or is Ange right? it's hurting the other people around him and he should stop
@Tram I think that Marcus is so mad he isn't thinking about what he is doing. His goal is to get revenge, get back his freedom that he thinks he deserves.
I think his Dad is on the DHS's side because he wants who ever made his son dissapear for 4 days to pay, think about if your parents went missing during a terrorist attack or your best friend. Wouldn't you be a little pissed? Wouldn't you do anything to make them pay?
But the DHS were the ones who took Marcus and his friends so if Marcus's dad wants to hurt the people who took Marcus they wouldn't be on the DHS side.
I feel sorry for Marcus because he strongly believes in stopping the DHS and his two best friends have just left him on his own telling him they don't want to help out. Will Ange take the place of them, or become his new partner in stopping the government?
I agree, it seemed like they were such close friends. Van and Jolu didn't seem too sad about ditching Marcus. I believe Ange and Marcus will continue to become close friends and she will help him fight the government.
@Melissa I agree with you on the fact that I would be extremely sad if my two best friends did not back me up and fight for the cause that I believe in.
@Melissa Yes, I believe that Ange will not take their place, because I believe they will still play a role of some sort again in the story, but that she will help Marcus on his way in stopping the DHS from here on out. Kathleen
@Melissa I definitley think that Ange will help out Marcus in stopping the government. I think that she understands Marcus a lot more than his friends did so she will stand by him and help a lot.
@Melissa That is hard to say because we do not really know Ange that well. I wonder if Ange is shallow like Julia or if she truly believes in the cause to bring down the DHS. I do not think that it will be the two of them alone out to fight the DHS.
I had a teacher once who didn't necessarily force her opinion on the class but corrected our opinions. If she didn't like our opinion she didn't let us talk about it. Do you think that is ok or is that the same as forcing an opinion on someone.
@class How many people do you think know about how much the government tracks them and monitors their life? DO you think that if they did know that they would stop supporting the DHS/government?
I don't think they really know how much the government tracks them. For instance, we just learned Facebook tracks its users after they log out, and people have had accounts for a long time. I believe the people would stop supporting the government as much if they were aware how much they are watched and tracked.
@Natalie B. I think that Ange is true and she wants to take down the DHS. I don't think they will turn against each other, even though we didn't expect the ending of 1984 so you never know.
@Class Why were the people on the X-Net so sure they wouldn't get arrested during the illegal concert? Were they expecting that the police would come with helicopters and drop pepper spray or something like that?
How do you think Marcus changed after his Mom told him the reality of his missing and how his dad and her were brought together because of him? What emotion do you think it brought out?
@Jayla I think that you only don't deserve your safety if you actually choose for your rights to be taken away. Do you agree that they should be taken away in order to have "safety"? If so, then I agree with Ben Franklin. But personally, I don't agree my rights being taken, but I ultimately have no choice but to have them taken away. Also, do you guys think that we are actually getting safety by what the government is doing, or do you think that it is like how it is in Little Brother, where they take away your rights under the impression that they are somehow stopping terrorists? Kathleen
@Annie I dont think they are doing all the protection protocalls because they feel that its for the best, but i think it is satisfying the terrorists because they are seeing how much impact they have had from what they did
@Colleen I think that pretty much all of the citizens know about how much they are watched and tracked but are willing to give up a lot of their rights in return for security.
@Inner circle I saw a thing on tv about airport security and they hire people to test security and they have had hundreds of times these people pass security with a weapon of some sort, so jack i dont feel that a lot of airplanes would be blown up if we got rid of security since its been proved that we have the capability to cause destrucion with airplanes
I agree, if people still really wanted too cause harm on an airplane they could. Then what happens? Do we take the security to the next level, what would that level be?
At the airport--do they have to have just cause or a reason to pat you down? Is that fair? If they just "Choose" you for a pat down. That doesn't seem right.
@ Class Do you think that some of the people who were arrested at the party may have been at Marcus's key signing party, and may have the pictures of peoples keys on their phone?
@Sofia There are creeps in the world and if we give them the opportunity to pat us down, that's just wrong. Since when did they get pat down recently? They probably don't know what it feels like to be violated going through security.
@Angelo I think that some of the people who were arrested were at Marcus' party, because they all use the X-Net. I don't think they would have the pictures on their phone though because Marcus instructed them to delete them after copying them down.
At what point to do follow your inner voice and say something is wrong. Or, because it is a "rule," do you just passively accept that sometimes your rights will be taken away from you and there is nothing you can do about it.
@mmoritz I think there are certain rules worth breakinng and if they're stupid and not right like all this people should just bear the punishment rather than follow it.
I think the resistance will be angrier by the arrests, but I don't know if they would do anything about it unless they figured out a way to get the true information out to the world.
Both Julia and Ange want to have a serious relationship and they both want to meet someone that is on their side.
ReplyDeleteWhere do you think the book will go from here? Will the resistance become greatest or die off with all the arrests?

I think it will either remain the same or get worse before the situation gets better.

DeleteI don't think it can be considered going too far if that's where the class wanted to go. Maybe if violence happened it would be too far but it didn't.
Delete@Class
ReplyDeleteDo you think Van or Ange is more relatable to Julia in 1984? I could see them both being like her in a way.
Absolutely--They are both very forward and they are both very driven to get what they want. We will have to see if Ange has more depth than Julia.
