@Kathleen I think that Winston will not get caught because I predict that Winston will turn to the proles and they will rebel against the government and will succeed.
@Kathleen I think that Winston will eventually be caught by the Thought Police. I think that if/when he is caught by them, then he will try to take the Party down from the inside.
@Natalie I did not expect Julia to end up liking her because Winston said how he hated her and that she was cruel. I thought she was a dedicated party member as well. But it turns out she is not.
@ Kathleen Yes I do believe that Winston will be caught by the thought police because no matter what people in their society do, the "criminals" are caught and punished because they don't think like everyone else.
Kathleen I think that the only way for Winston to make any real impact is to get caught by the thought police because he will be closer to the government and can cause more harm than he ever could have if he wasn't going to get caught. It is the only way for the story to progress.
@Natalie I think even though Julia was a dedicated member, it isn't very surprising that she ended up liking Winston because she had given him that note before that said "I love you". The note shows she cares about him.
@Kathleen I think it is inevitable that he will eventually be caught because he and Julia are being careless. Also, there may be cameras or telescreens in the prole area that they do not know about. He is being fairly obvious, in my opinion, about being against Big Brother.
@Kathleen yes because when he first start defying the thought police, the children who help the government found him suspicious so its very likely that they would spy on him or would tell the government plus he's not good at staying unsuspecting
Natalie, I don't think really anyone expected to see what Julia was really like or to even her liking Winston. And do you think that there are other party members like Julia and Winston?
@Natalie I think Julia realizes that Winston is different, and that she is just trying to fit in with everyone else so that no oe suspects her. She probably wants a relationship with someone that will understand her true thoughts, but doesn't want anyone to be suspicious against her. -Taylor O.
@Eli I think that it is one thing of beauty that he has never seen before and so he holds it close to him because he is surrounded by ugly and the same thing every day.
@Natalie Julie is not the party member she plays to be. She is an actress, a person lying about who she is and I do think she is curious as to Winston. As she said, there was something about his eyes that attracted her. She is curious, just like Winston.
Do you think that Julia is maybe some sort of under cover agent for the government, and is just trying to get evidence that Winston should be reported to the thought police? -Taylor O.
@Class Do you think that Julia truly loves Winston, considering how many relationships she has had with so many different men? Or do you think that she is just trying to learn more about him for the Party's benefit?
Throughout the whole book it is evident that the author uses the words 'making love' instead of having sex but it it clear that they are not in love, they are just doing it to fill their desires.
@Natalie Maybe she's faking the political side. Maybe she's being like winston. She acts like every one else but what she's thinking is totally different,
Jayla Yeah, I think that there are others, yet their thoughts probably fade or they become frightened of Big Brother. Although they could have done something and been killed.
I believe that either Winston or Julia will get caught by the thought police and then the other will get angry and start a rebellion against Big Brother.
@Class Do the proles even want to rebel, or care the way that things are around them? It doesn't seem like they have even put any thought into rebelling because it is outside of their community. Kathleen
@Lauren I think that she thinks she is in love but she is not exactly sure as to what true love is. She wants to be in love so badly and she is using Winston as that special person.
@Lauren & Taylor I think that Julia may be a spy, considering that she seems like such a loyal party member yet she is interested in Winston. The party may have an eye on him because he lived before Big Brother and they may be worried about him going against the party.
@Taylor I do not think that Julia seeks compainionship with someone who understands her because she said that she had slept with several other people before, I think that Winston is just a fad to her. I do not trust her. I do not think that she is completely comitted.
@Taylor I think that Julia may be an agent for the Party who is trying to get evidence of Winston rebelling. If she is, I think that she is getting caught up in the drama of the moment and may truly like Winston.
Lauren A. I really do think that Julia is good and maybe she is in love with Winston, or maybe he's just other man to her, but I don't believe that she is spying on him or trying to get more information out of him.
@Anonymous I don't think that Julia is an undercover agent because the thought police would have no trouble arresting Winston, or anyone for that matter, with nothing more but just an ounce of suspicion. So I don't think that they would even need an undercover agent. Also, if they did have an undercover agent I think they would be afraid that the agent would get sucked into Winston's belief and double cross them. It's just the paranoid nature of the government.
@Lauren I think that Julia doesn't truely love him because when she first talked with each other, she gave him a love letter. I don't think thats love.She didn't barely know him, why would she love him?
I don't think neither Julia nor Winston are being careless. They are taking many precautions to be together, and I think Julia has a good cover by being strongly involved with the party, and showing dedication so no one would suspect her. And Julia reveals that she has experience doing that type of thing.
@Kathleen i think that the proles don't care about the party because it doesn't apply to them. As long as they are not controlled, they are not willing to make any difference to the system.
@Kathleen The proles do not seem to even know what is happening outside the world that they live in, so they would have no idea what to rebel against/for. They seem pretty happy with their life as it is because they are not bothered by the party.
@inner circle As to who will be caught by the thought police, I do agree Winston will probably be caught, but not Julie. I don't think there is a true "thought police" that can read the thoughts of a person, but I do believe that a person thinking thoughts that they know are illegal act a certain way that can lead to an arrest. You have to be a great actor to be able to mask your thoughts to seem like the complete opposite, like Julie can do about her rebellious actions and thoughts.
Don't you think that if Julia was a spy she would have given Winston's name to the thought police by now? They've been together for over a month, and she was obviously watching him beforehand. Kathleen
@ Taylor O. I agree with you, the first time that Winston and Julia met it might have been in a place that even though no goverment equipment could work or be hidden maybe they just needed someone that Winston trusted and was interested in. Who else better than the young, attractive Julia?
Kathleen, I just think that the Proles have given up and lost hope. They think that they can't just the way of the new world no matter how hard they try!
@Drew The author always tries to throw in the unexpected and so I think that Juila will get caught and taken in. I wonder if the Party will know about Winston and try to catch him. I do not think that one or both of their arrests will be simple and quick.
@Kathleen I think that the proles think that they are such a small population that even if they wanted to rebel, they are not a large enough group to do so and make a difference. I also think that the proles believe that for them, things aren't so bad, so they have no reason to justify rebelling.
@Class Julia seems to be a dangerous person, especially in the world that they live in. Do you think that Julia will somehow be Winston's downfall by getting him in some sort of trouble?
@Inner circle, maybe she is part of the big brother sceme. Like her dad helped with the making of big brother but she does't really accept that idea or doesn't really like it
Julia might be a spy, and the relationship might not mean very much to her now, but feelings are developing between them and I think Julia will come to really love Winston, and he her.
@Moritz Julia confuses me more than irritates. I don't really understand her motives. She intrests me too because I see so many possiblities in her. She could be who she says she is, or she could be undercover for the government. -Taylor O.
I don't think that Julia is a spy because of the way she talks about the government. Even Winston was shocked by how much she cursed and despised the party. And she obviously likes sex.
mmoritz She really irritates me also because she is so secretive, and I understand nearly everyone and everything in this book is secretive. She can never keep her mind settled on one thing, she changes her mind every second, goes from man to man and her relationship with Winston is nearly nothing, definatly not love.
@Class There is a lot of suspicion surrounding Julia and Winston and whether or not they love each other. I think that it is almost like in having a boyfriend/girlfriend in 3rd grade. They have only the most faint idea of what love truly is.
@Ms. Moritz Julia irritates me too because I do not trust her with the way that she just sleeps with a bunch of people. I do not think that she will have a commited relationship with Winston. I agree with you that she is very fake and unreal. I think that Winston will be very let down several times in the book. I do think that Winston is blinded by how much that he wants to sleep with Julia.
@Sam I understand where you're going, however, she could just be covering up her love towards the government system by saying she hates them. -Taylor O.
Do you think that O'Brien will help or hurt Winston? He is mentioned before in the book and I wonder if he will become a major character later and whether he is on Winston's side or Big Brother's.
@Mrs.Mortiz Julia grew up in the Party and to her this is the only way she can "stick it to the party". She also row up not making those relationships and connections. And Winston seem to want to have a relationship or wants to progress to something more with Julia, because he mentioned it, and even thought what it would be like to marry her....
@Class Winston's society is filled with extremes. Things like buying flowers and going out to dinner have been completely eradicated from the face of the earth. People jump to sex because it is all they know and is what they immediately associate with love.
In the book when Julia and Winston first meet in the clearing, Julia says that she has done this scores of times before with other Party members when Winston asks her about it. Do you think that in her other 'relationships' she has taken the same approach that she did with her and Winston's? Kathleen
@Gabriella I think she is just trying to fit in with the rest of the females that are her age. Most of them are a part of it, so she wants to be too to draw suspicion away from her.
@mmoritz She does irritate me because she has no substance. She goes around looking for her newest lover, trying to rebel against the system but doesn't believe in a true uprising against the government, which seems hypocritical. She doesn't want a relationship that has any meaning or substance. She is shaky with her beliefs. She does confuse and irritate me.
@Gabriella I think that Julia does not want to be a part of the programs that she is currently in. She has has a thing with Winston maybe just to protest the government in every little way she can.
@Gabriella I think that the whole Party is horribly corrupt, as is shown when Julia brings sugar, real coffee, and makeup from the Inner Party when she and Winston meet in the apartment. Although the Party doesn't allow the citizens themselves to have these things, the Party members have them. It looks like the "rules" are bent for Party members, and since Julia is a Party member and has connections to the Inner Party, then maybe they bend the rules for her, too?
@Inner Circle I was just talking about this but it's like there being a huge red button in a room when you are little and it says don't touch but it makes you want to touch it way more because that curiosity is bigger then.
Kathleen No, I dont think she went about the same way with her other 'relationsips' and that's why I think she has somewhat of real feelings for Winston, maybe not love, but something.
@Natalie B. I agree with you about Charrington. He seems like he is a part of something bigger, it doesn't make sense that he would freely let Julia and Winston meet without him having something to do with either the party or him wanting to help their cause.
@ Outer Circle The apartment reminds me of a jail cell. You can live your own life but you are being watched 24-7 with the camera. Wait, isn't that happening now because everywhere there are cameras that watch you in order to keep us safe and to catch the criminals. What if someone hurts someone for the best reason and they still go to jail.
Do you think that Julia is a catalyst as Clarisse was to Montag? Julia certainly changed Winston's thinking and prompted him to "challenge the system".
@Kathleen I do think that Julia approached Winston the same way as her other relationships, but I think Winston adds more thought to their meetings and I also think that he is the only one of her lovers that shows his fear besides the party,like the rats and death.
I think that parents should trust until you have done wrong. Big Brother just seems to be like that strict parent that will not let their kid do anything. This level of control just makes kids or people more curious about the world.
@mmoritz I believe that yes, Julia is a catalyst as Clarisse was to Montag, but Winston was already on his way to wanting to challenge the system, unlike in Fahrenheit 451, where Montag hadn't even considered the idea. Kathleen
@Moritz I don't think that Julia is like Clarisse because Clarisse was a more of a pure person and she had strong morals. Julia is very confused and she is not sure where her loyalties lie.
@Anna Z. The big difference between 1984 and today, is that the cameras in the book are not only watching for criminals, but the people too. There's no privacy. They have cameras in their home too. Most homes don't have cameras in their rooms and in their house in general. There's a little more privacy in present day than there is in the book. -Taylor O.
mmoritz, Julia and Clarisse could both be catalyst, but Clarisse and Julia are completley diferrent. Julia at a glance is for the system set, but Clarisse at a glance was very against it.
@Gabriella I think that maybe part of the plan is for Julia to seduce Winston so that he tells her about his dislike for the Party, and his innermost feelings about it so that they can charge him for Thought Crime? Or maybe the plan was just for Julia to find out about Winston's plans and ideas, but she is getting caught up in the moment and is finding that she actually does like Winston.
@Jayla I don't think that bothers Winston because he hadn't ever really heard someone say I love you, so he may not be thinking about the commitment and connection between he and Julia.
@mmoritz there is defiantly a connection between Fahrenheit 451 and 1984 with the way they are to approach challenging the system. In the end she might not be bad but he might be the only one caught. I think he wanted to go against the party but Julia was the person to initiate the actual challenge.
@Natalie I agree with your comment about Big Brothers parenting of their civilization. He doesn't give the people any room to breathe, so they either choose to follow strictly or rebel in stupid ways. Kathleen
@mmoritz I do think that Julia is a catalyst as Clarisse was to Montag. She basically started the fire for him. Before she came along, he had his own ideas, but then when she came along he wanted to take it even farther.
@Sam Julia did mention that the 60 year-old Inner Party member that she had an affair with commited suicide so that they were not put in jail. Maybe that is why they haven't tried to kill her?
@ANNA Z. I think there is a difference between our worlds cameras and those of the books. Our cameras are used to protect people, where as the ones in the book are used for control, controlling the people in their every day lives to be able to hold onto the power they have.
@Sam G. I think it depends on how their relationship ended, if they cut it off to avoid suspicion, then they probably avoid talking to her so that they are not arrested. If she ended it for some readon, then they may be confused or angry but fear that if they confront her they will be caught. She seems so loyal to the party that I think what she says will matter more than what the other person says so the would put the blame on the other person.
I think Julia is a catalyses because Julia helped give Winston the edge he need to do something, even though he had progressed a little on his own Julia introduced something more.
mmoritz I agree that Julia is a catalyst for Winston like Montag and Clarisse because Montag was thinking differently than everyone else and just needed someone to help him change.
@Ms. Moritz I think that Julia is a catalyst but not in the way that Clarisse was. Clarisse inspired Montag by looking at the world a different way and that seemed more positive than Julia. Winston is probably too love struck to see that Julia is pretty much minipulating him. I do not think that Julia is trustworthy and so her catalyst force is negative.
@inner cicle I don't think that Julia is the catalyst because he starting defying the system before he met Julia and Montage starting after he met Clarrise. Montage met clarisse then he felt like defying the system. Julia is just contributing to winston's idea
Do you think that Winston is going to be caught by the thought police?
ReplyDeleteKathleen
Did you expect Julia to end up "liking" Winston? I think she comes off as a true dedicated Party member.
ReplyDeleteKathleen
ReplyDeleteYeah, I do becuase I think that he is just being careless and sloppy and needs to become a better lier to stay safe.
@Kathleen
ReplyDeleteI think that Winston will not get caught because I predict that Winston will turn to the proles and they will rebel against the government and will succeed.

ReplyDeleteWell I think she will end up liking him, maybe she's not as loyal as she seems to be, maybe it's just a cover to who she really is.
@Kathleen

Do you think that Julia is a catalyst as Clarisse was to Montag? Julia certainly changed Winston's thinking and prompted him to "challenge the system".
ReplyDelete@Kathleen
ReplyDeleteI do think that Julia approached Winston the same way as her other relationships, but I think Winston adds more thought to their meetings and I also think that he is the only one of her lovers that shows his fear besides the party,like the rats and death.
I think that parents should trust until you have done wrong. Big Brother just seems to be like that strict parent that will not let their kid do anything. This level of control just makes kids or people more curious about the world.
ReplyDeleteWhy haven't any of Julia's lovers tried to turn her in or kill her?
ReplyDeleteDoesn't that no commitment and no deep connection bother Winston? What about Julia asking him why he didn't shove his wife off the cliff?
ReplyDelete@mmoritz
ReplyDeleteI believe that yes, Julia is a catalyst as Clarisse was to Montag, but Winston was already on his way to wanting to challenge the system, unlike in Fahrenheit 451, where Montag hadn't even considered the idea.
Kathleen
@Sam--they are probably afraid. She could turn them in just as easily.
ReplyDelete@Moritz
ReplyDeleteI don't think that Julia is like Clarisse because Clarisse was a more of a pure person and she had strong morals. Julia is very confused and she is not sure where her loyalties lie.
@Anna Z.
ReplyDeleteThe big difference between 1984 and today, is that the cameras in the book are not only watching for criminals, but the people too. There's no privacy. They have cameras in their home too. Most homes don't have cameras in their rooms and in their house in general. There's a little more privacy in present day than there is in the book.

@Sam
ReplyDeleteThey have not turned her in because if they did then her lovers would also be in trouble.
mmoritz,
ReplyDeleteJulia and Clarisse could both be catalyst, but Clarisse and Julia are completley diferrent. Julia at a glance is for the system set, but Clarisse at a glance was very against it.
@Gabriella
ReplyDeleteI think that maybe part of the plan is for Julia to seduce Winston so that he tells her about his dislike for the Party, and his innermost feelings about it so that they can charge him for Thought Crime? Or maybe the plan was just for Julia to find out about Winston's plans and ideas, but she is getting caught up in the moment and is finding that she actually does like Winston.
@Jayla
ReplyDeleteI don't think that bothers Winston because he hadn't ever really heard someone say I love you, so he may not be thinking about the commitment and connection between he and Julia.
@mmoritz
ReplyDeletethere is defiantly a connection between Fahrenheit 451 and 1984 with the way they are to approach challenging the system. In the end she might not be bad but he might be the only one caught. I think he wanted to go against the party but Julia was the person to initiate the actual challenge.
@Sam
ReplyDeleteI think she has a good eye for those that are against the government and can pick them out.

ReplyDelete@Natalie
ReplyDeleteI agree with your comment about Big Brothers parenting of their civilization. He doesn't give the people any room to breathe, so they either choose to follow strictly or rebel in stupid ways.
Kathleen
@mmoritz
ReplyDeleteI do think that Julia is a catalyst as Clarisse was to Montag. She basically started the fire for him. Before she came along, he had his own ideas, but then when she came along he wanted to take it even farther.
@Sam
ReplyDeleteJulia did mention that the 60 year-old Inner Party member that she had an affair with commited suicide so that they were not put in jail. Maybe that is why they haven't tried to kill her?
@ANNA Z.
ReplyDeleteI think there is a difference between our worlds cameras and those of the books. Our cameras are used to protect people, where as the ones in the book are used for control, controlling the people in their every day lives to be able to hold onto the power they have.
@Sam G.
ReplyDeleteI think it depends on how their relationship ended, if they cut it off to avoid suspicion, then they probably avoid talking to her so that they are not arrested.
ReplyDeleteMen aren't aloud because their instincts are less controllable.
ReplyDeletemmoritz
ReplyDeleteI agree that Julia is a catalyst for Winston like Montag and Clarisse because Montag was thinking differently than everyone else and just needed someone to help him change.
@Ms. Moritz
ReplyDeleteI think that Julia is a catalyst but not in the way that Clarisse was. Clarisse inspired Montag by looking at the world a different way and that seemed more positive than Julia. Winston is probably too love struck to see that Julia is pretty much minipulating him. I do not think that Julia is trustworthy and so her catalyst force is negative.
Do you think Julia has any other motives other than sex?
ReplyDelete-Taylor O
ReplyDelete@inner cicle
ReplyDeleteI don't think that Julia is the catalyst because he starting defying the system before he met Julia and Montage starting after he met Clarrise. Montage met clarisse then he felt like defying the system. Julia is just contributing to winston's idea
