  1. What is the significance of Mildred giving in and reading the books?

  2. PAIGE
I agree with the thought that they don't really love each other and that it is similar to an arranged marriage situation because they don't really have conversations and don't remember where they met.

    ReplyDelete
  3. @Eli
Montag's marriage with Mildred is very different from today in many ways. First of all they do not remember when and how they met, they are not very socially active, and Mildred is interested more in the tv walls then in her own husband.

    ReplyDelete
  4. JAYLA
I think the fact that Mildred did not remember them meeting proved that she didn't actually loved him, she only loves the people in the television. She actually thinks that those people on the screen are her family. I think Mildred doers love her husband, she just doesn't know how.

    ReplyDelete
  5. @Jack
I think that she is curious about the books and also doesn't Montag convince her that they are in this together and can't go back.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Why does Mildred prefer her "family," not Montag? Does she really even care about him or not? And is her "family" just TV characters or voices of people?

    ReplyDelete
  7. JACK S
I think Mildred gave in to reading the books because she really did love him and started to notice that they were drifting apart and she wanted to come back together.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Based on their relationship so far, how do you think that Montag would react if his wife died?

    ReplyDelete
  9. When Beatty comes to the house because Montag is "sick" and didn't come into work, he explains to him the history of firemen. Does Beatty suspect Montag for having a book?

    ReplyDelete
  10. @paige
Why do you think she is so inconsiderate of her husband?

    ReplyDelete
  11. At what point do you think people began to be controlled by television and why does the government prefer it that way?

    ReplyDelete
  12. @Inner Circle
Mildred obviously knows that she isn't sick that is why she isn't taking care of him. He knows he isn't sick as well, he is playing hookie because he does not want to go back to work. Mildred is worried that he is going to loose money, and that is why she wants him to go back to work.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I do believe that they do get sick, but because the people in their society do not really interact with one another the chances of catching a cold is reduced.

    ReplyDelete
  14. @JACK S
I think Beatty definitely thinks that Montag has a book because I think that the situation of firemen taking books occurs consistently, so he deals with it a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  15. @garrett
Because she doesn't actually love him, just thinks she does

    ReplyDelete
  16. @Sam
I think that the government likes the control now because all of the people are in order and the people only have to worry about the mysterious war that is going on.

    ReplyDelete
  17. @Sam G
The government wants them to be controlled by the television because they can control everything that projects through the screen, while books can be written through ones own thoughts. They do not want people to read about how it was before (in the past).

    ReplyDelete
  18. How does everyone know who clarisse is when they never go outside and socialize?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Did Beatty see that Mildred had felt the book under Montag's pillow and just pretended that he didn't see it? It seems like he kind of knows that Montag has books hidden in his house...

    ReplyDelete
  20. @inner circle
Montag probably got the books from the fires before they lit them.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Awesome question Sam!!! I don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @Jianna
I agree on the fact that so far only Montag, Clarisse, and Beatty think deeply and ask questions.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Natalie
I think if Mildred died he would miss her because they are companions and he cares for her. But then again a big weight would be lifted because he wouldn't have to care for her and her medical problems.

    ReplyDelete
  24. @jack Smith
I don't think Beatty suspects Montag of stealing a book, I think Beatty thinks that Montag is going to quit his job and is unsure why he is a fireman any more, so Beatty had to explain to him why he does his job

    ReplyDelete
  25. @Sam G
Beatty said that they have a record of Clarisse and that they have been watching her and her family.

    ReplyDelete
  26. This happened in WWII when Hitler would just feed his propaganda to the people so since the government is controlling what people are seeing or doing, they don't know any different so they think it is right and just.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Beatty knows all of this info and has even read a couple books, how come he isn't questioning life like Montage is?

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Jack and Natalie
That is true but when did the government change? Nowadays the government supports the ideas of reading and socializing at least it seems that way.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Mildred started to refer to characters on the tv as family members. This is also a sign that Mildred and Montag aren't close because she is adding virtual people to the family that she talks to more than her actual family. (Anne)

    ReplyDelete
  30. At what point do you guys think is the cut off between people who know what the government is trying to do, and the people who are controlled. Do you think Beatty knows what the government is trying to do?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Garret-
I think that she feels like she knows the people on the TV more than her own husband so she chooses to be kinder to them.

    ReplyDelete
  32. In Beatty's explanation of why the firemen went from stopping fires to starting them, I was very surprised that the government had little part in the censorship of books.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Do you think Montag will try to find someone to replace Clarisse? Someone to talk to, because obviously he can't talk to his wife. So sad.

    ReplyDelete
  34. @Rachel
I agree that its a subconcience sort of sickness, like he just couldn't handle going into work after seeing the women set herself on fire and so he stays home even though his sickness was probably not so bad that he couldn't work.

    Kathleen C.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @Tram
With being the Captain of the Firemen he might not get the opportunity to to ask questions about life. Also if the government is controlling him to be the example for the other firefighters.

    ReplyDelete
  36. @ tram
I don't think he is questioning life because he knows that it won't do any good, just cause more harm.

    ReplyDelete
  37. @ Lauren A.
I do believe by now that Beatty knows that Montag has a book or two. Based on the fact that Beatty brings up that every once in a while a firemen gets suspicious and decides to read a book, and he says that it is okay as long as they burn it within 24 hours or else the firemen will burn it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. @inner circle
Clarisse's death had little visual effect on Montag. In this world where war is all around and kids kill kids, I see how he didn't feel a huge hit.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think that Montag will try to take over Clarisse's role in questioning society and I think the books are the first step. I also wonder why he had this sudden revolution and why he had kept the books. The first line in the book is, "It was a pleasure to burn." I get why he took the book from the old woman but why would he have kept so many other books?

    ReplyDelete
  40. @Mrs. Moritz
I think Montag would want to find someone to replace Clarisse because from talking to her he now knows what it's like to have a real conversation and think about things but I'm not sure if he would know where to go to "find" a new Clarisse.

    ReplyDelete
  41. @MORITZ
I don't think Montag will look for someone to replace Clarisse because he doesn't know what to look for. Clarisse was indescribable to him and everybody else in society besides her family.

    ReplyDelete
  42. @ Rachael
If bringing back books is the turning point then how is it going to happen? How will that bring a peaceful ending? OR will this story not have a peaceful ending?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm suprised Mildred actually sat down and tried to read the books with Montag when he showed them to her. It seems that there isn't enough trust or connection between then to keep a secret that big. I thought she would go tell someone about to books. (Anne)

    ReplyDelete
  44. @class
Why did Beatty seem so sour about the whole system in the modern world when he was telling Montag why books had started to be burnt? Do you think that he used to have books and if so, do you think he liked and cared about them? In the book, he seemed angry about the whole thing.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think when they start reading books Mildred and Montag might start to converse with eachother more and start to care.

    ReplyDelete
  46. @moritz
I doubt that he will find a replacement for Clarisse. He is just now starting to read books and I believe that they will grow to replace her. She only has a limited knowledge on everything, while books can specialize on different things.

    ReplyDelete
  47. @MMoritz
Maybe Montag is going to try to become more like Clarisse, so that he can be the Clarisse for other people. It sounds like it would be very hard for him to find another person like Clarisse.

    Kathleen

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think it would be difficult in the society they are apart of to find someone else to talk to like Montag talked to Clarisse. Not everybody is so free-spirited and willing to talk about anything-not nothing like Clarisse and her family.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Beatty quoted a book after the woman killed herself with her books. Do you think he is really a well-read man who hides behind the facade of being a fireman so that he can read?

    ReplyDelete
  50. @Sam
I agree with you, the books will be like a common ground they share. It will also give them something to talk about.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I was suprised that Montag could even read the book when he first got it. He had troubles when he first read it but it seems like he would have no idea how to read at all because he was never able to before. (Anne)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Jack Smith-
I think that her death was a rude awakening to Montag. I think it did have an obvious effect on him, he didn't just accept it. He didn't want it to be true.

    ReplyDelete
  53. @Anne
I agree with that. I thought she was going to answer the door and get Montag in trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  54. @ Mrs. Moritz
I do believe that Montag will search or try to find someone else like Clarisse to talk to. Mainly because I believe as he reads these books he will have questions about them and besides Clarisse evreryone else in the society doesn't really have concern about anything else. So if Montag doesn't find someone like Clarisse to talk to he will just be stuck with a lot of un answered questions.

    ReplyDelete
  55. @Maura
I don't think that Montag will find SOMEONE to help fill the void for Clarise but SOMETHING rather. I think the books will help him through this tough time that he is dealing with. The books will work as a human influence, even though it is an object.

    ReplyDelete
  56. @Mrs. Moritz
    I think he already has..
Instead of finding some one like clarise, some one will become a figure like that. I think his wife going to fulfill that position after he/they find the meaning of life

    ReplyDelete
  57. @MMORITZ
I think that Beatty definitely reads or used to read a lot because he quoted that text flawlessly. I think that he also understands what Montag is going through with his questioning phase.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think Montag won't try to find someone to replace Clarisse because he knows not enough people are like that in to world to find someone like her. This was the first person he had ever met like her. (Anne)

    ReplyDelete
  59. When Montag is trying to sleep and he feels a chill and looks out the window, is the hound out there hunting him? How did he know it was there and why is the hound out searching?

    ReplyDelete
  60. @Sam
I do not know when the government started their control. I do not think that the people even know when it started because they dated the burning back to the civil war... The government can not control what is printed as easily as they can what is transmitted.

    ReplyDelete
  61. The next section is called "The Sieve and the Sand" and if the word sieve means someone who can't keep a secret, which character will spill a secret and what could the secret be about?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Maybe Montag will be like Clarisse and open other people and get them to start talking and questioning the system.

    ReplyDelete
  63. @ANNA Z
I believe that that is a good question and I am not sure what the secret might be, but I believe that Mildred would spill the secret because she doesn't appear to be someone that thinks before she speaks.

    ReplyDelete
  64. @Anna Z
That is a really good question, and I think that if someone were to spill a secret it would be Mildred about the books. I doubt it would be hard for her to turn against her husband and have him taken away to the asylum, or even killed.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Since Montag couldn't understand the books when he first read them I think he will try someone to help him. He knows there is someone out there that will because there was that one night in the park when the strange man started to ask him about books and gave him a card. He might still have the card and try to find him to help Montag read and understand the books. (Anne)

    ReplyDelete
  66. Will Montag ever go back to work in the firehouse? Or will he stay home and read books till they come and take him away? I think he will go back to the firehouse eventually to be able to get more books...

    ReplyDelete
  67. @Jack S.
I don't think the hound is hunting him specifically. It might be like a routine thing that the hound does, once a week or something they send it out to go track down people or things.

    ReplyDelete
  68. @Mrs. Moritz
I agee with your idea that Beatty may in fact be reading books and may be hidding behind the power of being a firemen in order to keep reading books he may have in safety. I lean towards this idea because he recognizes when Montag says, "Once upon a time" and he seems to have a lot of knowledge/backround about books.

    ReplyDelete
  69. @class
I think that when Montag first starts to read the books, he will be frustrated and confused becasue he doesn't know how to read the books from beginning to end, like they should be read so that they make sense. This is mentioned on page 68. I think that it will take him a while to become intellectual and figure things out through the books, in the way that Clarisse seemed to think about things in a different, more intellectual perspective. Do you think that reading the books will help Mildred become more intellectual, and then allow she and Montag to bond more deeply? How will the books play a role in shaping how Montag and Mildred become different people throughout the book?

    ReplyDelete
  70. @Ms. Moritz
I don't nescessarily think that he uses his status as a fireman to hide his book reading. I get the impression that he is a well bred man of the government and he honestly doesn't care abotu the books. He does seem forgiving though so I think that he might have read a couple books here and there but he knows that it is against his duty.

    ReplyDelete
  71. @Anna Z
I beleive that Montag will tell Beatty what he did about taking the books and about reading them, so i think Montag will tell the secret.

    ReplyDelete
  72. @Class
DO you believe that Montag telling and showing Mildred all of the books he has was a mistake?

    ReplyDelete
  73. @Anna
I think that Mildred Might spill the secret that she read books or maybe Montag will tell Beatty because Beatty seems understanding about it.

    ReplyDelete
  74. @Eli
If beatty was actually at the door, than what would he do? He knew about that book already and he already gave Montage a day. Whats the point of coming back? Did the author do that to create anxiety for the readers? For Montage?

    ReplyDelete
  75. @Lauren A
I think the reason Beatty couldn't understand the books was for the same reason. He told Montag that they were useless because he couldn't understand them. Montag will have trouble at the start, but once he is able to comprehend the books, his mind will be opened.

    ReplyDelete
  76. @Jack Smith
I think he will go back too, to get more books. He may get caught, but then again he stole the books he already has without getting caught so whose to say he can't do it again? Maybe he will persuade other firemen to read and challenge the rules.

    ReplyDelete
  77. @Eli
If Captain Beatty was the one at the door, I think that the reason he would have come back is because he suspects they may have books. He seemed like he understood people and books in general, so maybe he suspects that maybe he would pull out books afterward.

    Kathleen

    ReplyDelete
  78. @Trevor, @Tram, @Jack
Yes I would agree that Mildred is a probable character to spill the secret, but what about Captain Beatty. Since he already has a file on Clarisse, could Montag find out the truth about Clarisse through Beatty?

    ReplyDelete
  79. I think Captain Beaty can tell Montag has books because he knows the signs. I think Beatty had books once because he was able to quote part of a book. Beatty probably had the same reaction when he went through the same thing. (Anne)

    ReplyDelete
  80. Do you think that all people know how to read? Does anyone know how to other than Beatty? If these people are so sheltered, how do you learn to read if you don't have books to help?

    ReplyDelete
  81. @RACHEL
I agree with you that he will challenge the system and like you, I don't have many thoughts on how it will turn out but I think once he gets people to think with him, they will be successful.

    ReplyDelete
  82. @Anna Z
I think it will be Clarisse's family to leak the secret. They always talk, and undoubtedly Clarisse shared Montag with them. When she died, they probably left their intellectual views and will conform to society, by turning Montag and Mildred in.

    ReplyDelete
  83. @Angelo
I think it could be a mistake if she gets nervous and tells someone that Montag has books, but it could also be a good thing if she reads the books and they encourage her to think more intellectually, allowing she and Montag to bond more?

    ReplyDelete
  84. @Anna
That is a good point, but it seems a bit too obvious. I did think about that but I feel like its too up-front, and is not likely because it is so likely. I hope that makes sense!

    ReplyDelete
  85. If Clarisse really is dead...what was her purpose?? Do you think she has done all she needed to do, or do you think she will eventually return to the story?

    ReplyDelete
  86. @class
How do you think the war is going to effect the novel? I feel like that has been overlooked. Will it still be as "peaceful"?

    ReplyDelete
  87. @Jack B
It makes sense and I see where you are coming from.

    ReplyDelete
  88. @Angelo
I do not think that showing Mildred the books was a mistake because she does not seem like the type of person to turn him in but it might strenghten their relationship. The books might open up a whole new world of ideas that no one had ever thought about before.

    ReplyDelete
  89. @inner circle
It seems that people conform to all regulations in this world. Will Montag try to challenge the system to remove all of the constraints and let people make their own views?

    ReplyDelete
  90. Was Clarise really killed in a car accident? Was it really an "accident?" I feel the government had something to do with it. Like their trying to eliminate the "odd ones".

    ReplyDelete
  91. @Natalie
They do read words every where, they watch television that has words, they have signs that have words and numbers, i think the format of books is just so weird and different that they aren't used to it.

    ReplyDelete
  92. @MMORITZ
I think that Clarisse's role in the story is not completed. However, in the thought of people's roles and purposes, do these people believe in any religion?

    ReplyDelete
  93. @Inner Circle
I'm not sure if a big rebellion could be started but if you talk to the right people something could be done. Some people probably are totally fine with not being able to read books so they wouldn't want to get involved while others if they start thinking about it they would really want to change how the government controls everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  94. What if the secret war is about the books but noone knows because the government is keeping the war secret?

    ReplyDelete
  95. @inner circle
I don't remember who stated that the Government has lead society to believe that reading book will not make you happy. Based on that fact i believe that if Montag dicedes to start a rebelion not many people will follow because people in his enjoy being happy and would not want to chance loosing that happiness.

    ReplyDelete
  96. @Jack B
I think that the war will allow Montag to do something and make a change in the world, because the other citizens will be distracted with things involving it?

    ReplyDelete
  97. @MMortiz
In general, I think that Clarisse has set up the story and set Montag on his path, but I still feel like she come back to help him with it. I have trouble believing that she just died and her family just got up and moved.

    Kathleen

    ReplyDelete
  98. @mmoritz
I think Clarisse's purpose in the story was to get Montag to start thinking about what he was doing. If Montag never met Clarisse then he probably wouldn't have read the books. I think she will never come back to the story but Montag might think about her and what she would do on his future journey. (Anne)

    ReplyDelete
  99. @tram
I think that it was the government who killed Clarisse because she was odd. But very easily it could have been an accident like a drunk driver.

    ReplyDelete
  100. @Tram
Although the government has a lot of control I don't know if they really could pick out somebody and have them killed. If they are doing that then it has to be a big deal with lots of people involved therefore the public would probably be more aware.

    ReplyDelete
  101. @Ms. Moritz
I definatly Clarisse will appear later in the book. For the book, her purpose was to question society and make Montag think. In the book I don't thinkg that she really had a set purpose that she knows of. She physically might not appear but her ideas and thoughts will definatly reoccur.

    ReplyDelete
  102. @CLASS
Do you believe that these characters in this era where all texts are burned believe in religion? Because wouldn't all religious texts be destroyed as well?

    ReplyDelete
  103. @Jianna
Besides Mildred I believe that Clarisse represents curiosity because she is the only one so far who is curious about everything and questions why things are the way they are.

    ReplyDelete
  104. @Jack S.
It just seems odd that when Beatty told Montag that they had a file on Clarisse and her family, and that she was supposedly killed before the conversation.

    ReplyDelete
  105. @Sam G
I agree that the war is possibly about the books but the government is just keeping it a secret. Do you think people will find out and finally rebel?

    ReplyDelete
  106. @Jack B.
I think that the war was a descriptive detail in the book rather than a main part. We don't know who is fighting in the war and what they are fighting for so I don't think it's a big deal.

    ReplyDelete
  107. @Tram
I also believe that te government may have had something to do with Clarisse's death, if she did really die. As Beatty made clear, people are watching her family and know that they are odd, and Beatty saw that her opinion has already changed Montag's opinion, so maybe they are trying to stop people from making others question how things are.
    Kathleen

    ReplyDelete
  108. Mildred is very focused on worldly possessions. She loves her T.V.'s and her show's. Montag is more of an idealistic person, and prefers to think and ponder the problems of the world. Is there a correlation where the two opposites (Montag and Mildred) get married?

    ReplyDelete
  109. @Jack
I don't think he can. I actually believe instead of a peaceful ending with everybody finding their own views and thinking, everything will be like "Harris and Burgeon". The two people who decide to stand up to society end up in a tragedy. I feel this will be Montage's story.

    ReplyDelete
  110. @Annie G
What if the television does not have words? Do you think that they could have cut all words out of society? With all of this technology, I wonder if they have people talk to people via electronic device.

    ReplyDelete
  111. @Trevor
If there is a religion I think it is one that the government has chosen, there are not as many different ones that we have now.

    ReplyDelete
  112. @Natalie B
I think the T.V.'s still have words because the "relatives" are always talking and they can hear them from around the house

    ReplyDelete
  113. Beatty says stuff like go talk to your family but he knows so much. I feel he understands the governments' intentions instead of being scared.

    ReplyDelete
  114. @Bloggers
I think it is possible that the war is about the books, could it possibly be a civil war? Are books banned around there world? Why would other countries care and fight us if we banned books?

    ReplyDelete
  115. @ Mrs.Moritz
I think that Clarisse's purpose in the story was to get Montag to question why is the Government having the firemen destroy all books as well as well as question weather or not he is happy with his life.

    ReplyDelete
  116. @trevor
I think that religon is outlawed but peolple probably have secret religons and are secretive about it.

    ReplyDelete
  117. @Natalie B.
That would be craazy, but totally possible. Numbers ofcourse are still apart of society, we know this because of the 451 on every firemen's uniform.

    ReplyDelete
  118. @class
Based on what we have read so far, why do you think that this book has been banned?

    ReplyDelete
  119. Jack B-
I don't think it would be a civil war because then more people would be like Clarisse or Montag.

    ReplyDelete
  120. @class
Does Mildred do anything for a living other than just watch TV all day? Did Montag know that he would have to work as a fireman to support he and Mildred or was Mildred a different person who was not lost in her TV "family" when they were married ten years ago?

    ReplyDelete
  121. It's sad that Mildred and Montag can't have even a simple conversation. When Montag asked about what was happening in her tv show she can't give him an actual response about what is happening. (Anne)

    ReplyDelete
  122. @Jack B
Maybe the country that Montag lives in might have invaded another country or several others on the subject of books; therefore, causing the civil war.

    ReplyDelete
  123. @CLASS
Do the people in this era ever leave there homes? Do they have to make a trip to the grocery store and interact there ever?

    ReplyDelete
  124. @class
How/what do these people eat if they never have to leave the house? Is food given to them or do they not eat?

    ReplyDelete
  125. @Trevor
I think they could get things transmitted or sent to them. How many rooms do you think that the typical house has? Do you think that they watch TV, eat, sleep, and do their jobs if they have one? Do you think that everyday blends into the next for average people.

    ReplyDelete
  126. @Natalie
Maybe because of the violence, like when Clarisse says that her teenage friends have killed each other, or when Mildred says that Clarisse was killed? Or maybe it is scary to think that our world is so much like the one in the book, and it is scary to think about our world being like that?

    ReplyDelete
  127. Mildred doesn't even know that much about her virtual 'family.' When Montag asks about the tv show she was watching she didn't even know if two of the characters were married or not. Mildred didn't care about what was happening in the family she just wanted to be entertained. (Anne)

    ReplyDelete
  128. @Jack
If it was a civil war then many people would be curious of why they are at war and so far people in the society haven't talked about or even mentioned the war besides Montag hearing and feeling the jets fly above.

    ReplyDelete
  129. @Trevor
The people do leave their homes because Montag has to walk from his home to the fire department and that is where he started talking to Clarisse. I bet the people do make errands to the grocery store and such. They mostly just go through life like they are in a haze it seems and occasionally talk with one another, just small talk though.

  130. Last thoughts--shut down. Wait to put away. :)

  132. When people watch too much TV, their brains kind of turn to mush. I do not think that these people are very bright because they watch TV almost all day and the TVs are so cheap, the inteligence level of these people is really low. I think that is another reason why the government likes controlling these people over the TV.

Last thought is I wonder how Montag will pursue his questions about the books?

  134. Does anyone excersize? Does everyone just sit around there house all day and watch TV, unless they're a fireman? And do they have any other jobs? Does anyone ever have weddings, and when they burn books do they burn pictures and scrapbooks too?

I agree with you. Have you even thought of it? I mean when did they? When did anyone in the story eat and have a decent conversation not including Clarise's family. I think the gov. has something to do with that because if you think about it. When families eat, most of the time, conversations start up.

I think almost everyone has a job. There has to be police and lawyers and important jobs like that. I'm sure Mildred in this situation is a housewife. I also DON'T think that they even take pictures anymore, it's probably just not interesting enough to them to keep the memories of the past.

I think people would have to leave their homes to get groceries and things like that. However, they probably just buy things in bulk so that they don't have to go to the store that often.

They probably don't even think about who they are marrying. They marry just because that's what "society" does, even though they don't really care.

I like your thought on the possibility that the government killed Clarisse, but I think it was probably just kids driving around way too fast and hit her.
